IRA holders can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) of up to $105,000 after age 70½ to reduce their taxable income. A QCD counts toward your required minimum distribution,* if applicable.
People who are age 70½ and older may elect, as part of their QCD limit, a one-time gift of up to $53,000, adjusted annually for inflation, to a charitable remainder unitrust, a charitable remainder annuity trust or a charitable gift annuity.
Key details of a QCD:
Most people who inherit IRAs from someone other than their spouse must take the money and pay taxes on it within 10 years, rather than stretching it over their expected lifetime. To reduce this tax burden, IRA holders may want to consider tax-advantaged charitable giving. If you believe your heirs would struggle with the tax burden of the 10-year IRA withdrawal schedule, consider donating your IRA funds to a favorite charity, such as the Blackhawk Foundation, and leaving different assets to your loved ones.
Be sure to talk to your tax and financial advisors about IRA rules and potential advantages of naming the Blackhawk Foundation as an IRA beneficiary as you plan to provide for your loved ones. Please contact Cassie Hartje at chartje1@blackhawk.edu or (608) 757-7704 with questions.
You can make a provision in your will or living trust that directs a portion of your estate to a named beneficiary, such as the Blackhawk Foundation. A bequest offers these benefits:
Cash, securities, and real estate may be willed to the Blackhawk Foundation through your estate. There are several ways to gift bequests, and there is specific language that needs to accompany these different gifts in your will. Please consult your tax, estate and financial planners for additional information. Contact Cassie Hartje at chartje1@blackhawk.edu or (608) 757-7704 with questions.
Significant tax advantages usually accrue to donors making outright gifts of appreciated real estate. Benefits to the donor include a full fair-market value charitable deduction, up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income, with a five-year carry-over provision and no capital gains tax on the property appreciation. Gifts of real estate will be credited at their appraised value at the time the gift is made. The Blackhawk Foundation reserves the right to either accept or reject any offer of real estate.
Be sure to talk to your tax and financial advisors about the potential advantages unique to your situation.
